Coffee Cup Sizes
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009Nearly everyone I’ve seen uses six ounces when discussing the “normal” size of a cup of coffee. This isn’t set in stone, it just seems to be the amount used. In the Bunn drip maker I use, four cups of coffee equals almost 20 ounces, or five ounces per cup. Many coffee mugs you buy are going to be eight ounces or more, leaving you room for cream and sugar if you use it.
I called four coffee shops/stores and for the most part, sizes are pretty consistent. Below is a list of sizes used by Heine Bros., Highland Coffee, Dunkin Doughnuts, and Starbucks; Starbucks of course, uses fancy names for their sizes.
Heine Bros. Coffee
Small: 10 oz.
Medium: 16 oz.
Large: 20 oz.
Highland Coffee
Small: 12 oz.
Medium: 16 oz.
Large: 20 oz.
Dunkin’ Doughnuts
Small: 10 oz.
Medium: 14 oz.
Large: 20 oz.
X-Large: 24 oz.
Starbucks:
Short (X-Small): 8 oz. Note: Unadvertised and only available for hot coffee drinks.
Tall (Small): 12 oz.
Grande (Medium): 16 oz.
Venti (Large): 20 oz.
I was going to check with Seattle’s Best, but the cafe locator on their site kept resetting and not letting me zoom in/out on the map. I don’t like pages that don’t work correctly for an important function like that, so I didn’t waste much time.
Heine Bros. 15th Anniversary Party, Oct. 16th
Tuesday, October 13th, 2009What: Heine Bros. Coffee 15th Anniversary Street Party
When: This Friday, October 16th from 5-10 pm
Where: Longest Avenue location
1295 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40204 [View Map]
If you’re looking for something to do this Friday, come celebrate Heine Brothers’ Coffee’s 15th anniversary! It’s going to be at the Longest Avenue location, my personal favorite of all the Heine Bros. According to their web site and posters, they will be “shutting down Longest Ave. to party in the street.” Other things you can expect include:
- Food from Ramsi’s Cafe, Gelato Gilberto, and Tony Boombozz
- Music from Relic, Thomas A. Minor, Supertruck, and Appalatin
- Birthday Cake
- Activities for the kids
- BBC Beer
I’ve only lived in Louisville since July, but I’ve been visiting for a couple years and always go to Heine Bros. It’s my favorite coffee shop anywhere, and so far I’ve been to six out of the seven locations; the only one I haven’t been to yet is the Gardiner Lane Shopping Center. This party should be a lot of fun and I look forward to participating in the celerbation. I hope to see you there!
Heine Bros. Named LEO's Best Coffee Shop
Thursday, October 1st, 2009It’s no surprise that Heine Bros. Coffee was chosen Louisville Eccentric Observer’s (LEO) “Best Coffee Shop” of 2009 [September 30, 2009. Volume 19, Number 44]. Heine Bros. was awarded first place to beat out Starbucks and Highland Coffee, receiving second and third places, respectively. Heine Bros. also rated second as the “Best Business to Have as a Facebook Friend.” Congratulations and keep up the great work!

Happy National Coffee Day!
Tuesday, September 29th, 2009Today I decided to observe National Coffee Day by launching my new coffee blog, http://coffee.geoffreyshilling.com/. I’m waiting on my WordPress installation to upload while enjoying a White Mocha (15% off 1-3pm Monday-Friday) at Heine Brothers’ Coffee – Eastern Parkway. I need to format the code a little better, but I couldn’t resist posting my first entry on National Coffee Day. Eventually I may get the code looking all nice and readable and package it up as a WordPress theme. The color scheme is intended to represent a coffee plant: green for the leaves, shades of brown for the coffee beans and stalk, and red for the cherries.
I have a lot of plans for this site and I hope I can successfully pull it off. I could work on this site as a full-time job and still never get everything I’d like to done. Some of the topics you can expect to see include: brewing, espresso, health issues, history, news, photos, recipes, roasting, grinding, growing, storage, and anything else I can find that relates to coffee.
Heine Brothers’ Coffee is by far my favorite coffee shop, so you’ll probably hear/see a lot about them. I’ve never had a bad cup of coffee there. Usually I’ll order their coffee of the day, although today I had a White Mocha because of the 15% discount I mentioned above. And, it’s National Coffee Day; I had to splurge a little.
I appreciate any comments or recommendations you may have. Thank you for reading and have a great National Coffee Day!
