More Bikini Shop Ruckus

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

BELLEVUE, Wash. — A bikini barista stand on the Eastside is vowing to keep serving despite protests from neighbors and action by the city.

Following a Bellevue City Council meeting about the stand, the City Attorney ordered the Knotty Bodies Espresso stand to close its drive-through window because it violates city code.

But the barista working Tuesday morning told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Dubois the owner’s attorney said the drive-through can remain open.

These bikini coffee shops/stands have been in the news quite a bit lately, and it seems they are becoming more common. I wonder if some may have started because they knew they could get quick, free publicity. On more than one occasion, I’ve read how some of these stands are basically a front for brothels. There are a lot of people saying these should be regulated as adult stores, limiting where they can open shop. Besides that, for me, I wouldn’t even want someone serving me coffee or pastries in what amounts to their underwear. Hooters is one thing, but bikinis? I’m perfectly content getting my coffee from a fully-clothed barista.

“WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Starting Nov. 23, you can know enjoy a cup of coffee like the Founding Fathers did in an authentic recreation of an 18th-century coffeehouse. More than 200 years since Americans gathered to discuss political and social issues in an authentic 18th-century coffeehouse, Colonial Williamsburg formally dedicates the R. Charlton Coffeehouse on Nov. 20. The coffeehouse is the Historic Area’s newest exhibition building and the first major reconstruction on Duke of Gloucester Street in more than half a century.”

I’m not a history buff by any means, but I think this coffeehouse sounds like it could be pretty cool. I’d love to visit, if only it were closer.

Did You Know…

“The London coffeehouse that Edward Lloyd opened in 1688 became the center of maritime intelligence and insurance – and evolved into the well-known Lloyds of London.”

“In 1793, a small group of auctioneers and merchants began meeting regularly at the Tontine Coffee House in New York City. Their enterprise eventually became the New York Stock Exchange.”

I think this just goes to show that some pretty important work can come from coffee shops.

Coffee Cup Sizes

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Nearly everyone I’ve seen uses six ounces when discussing the “normal” size of a cup of coffee. This isn’t set in stone, it just seems to be the amount used. In the Bunn drip maker I use, four cups of coffee equals almost 20 ounces, or five ounces per cup. Many coffee mugs you buy are going to be eight ounces or more, leaving you room for cream and sugar if you use it.

I called four coffee shops/stores and for the most part, sizes are pretty consistent. Below is a list of sizes used by Heine Bros., Highland Coffee, Dunkin Doughnuts, and Starbucks; Starbucks of course, uses fancy names for their sizes.

Heine Bros. Coffee
Small: 10 oz.
Medium: 16 oz.
Large: 20 oz.

Highland Coffee
Small: 12 oz.
Medium: 16 oz.
Large: 20 oz.

Dunkin’ Doughnuts
Small: 10 oz.
Medium: 14 oz.
Large: 20 oz.
X-Large: 24 oz.

Starbucks:
Short (X-Small): 8 oz. Note: Unadvertised and only available for hot coffee drinks.
Tall (Small): 12 oz.
Grande (Medium): 16 oz.
Venti (Large): 20 oz.

I was going to check with Seattle’s Best, but the cafe locator on their site kept resetting and not letting me zoom in/out on the map. I don’t like pages that don’t work correctly for an important function like that, so I didn’t waste much time.

Heine Bros. Named LEO's Best Coffee Shop

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

It’s no surprise that Heine Bros. Coffee was chosen Louisville Eccentric Observer’s (LEO) “Best Coffee Shop” of 2009 [September 30, 2009. Volume 19, Number 44]. Heine Bros. was awarded first place to beat out Starbucks and Highland Coffee, receiving second and third places, respectively. Heine Bros. also rated second as the “Best Business to Have as a Facebook Friend.” Congratulations and keep up the great work!
