Seven New Coffee Plants Now Documented

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Giant rainforest trees, tiny fungi and wild coffee plants are among almost 300 species that have been described by UK botanists for the first time in 2009.

Read the full BBC News article, “‘Bumper year’ for botanical finds.” Posted 00:06 GMT 12/22/09.

The article goes on to talk about the “Seven wild coffee species also feature on the list of new species, most of which were discovered in the mountains of northern Madagascar.” I wonder if they taste any good. The BBC has a picture showing Coffea ambongensis and Coffea boinensis, “whose ‘beans’ are more than twice the size of Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica).”

Drink Coffee to Help Prevent Diabetes

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – People who drink the most coffee and tea, even decaffeinated versions, can dramatically lower their risk of diabetes, researchers reported on Monday.

I really like studies that include decaf drinks along with regular coffee. It’s nice being able to differentiate if some of the effects are from coffee, or just the caffeine in it.

Tanzania Officials: Drink More Coffee

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Tanzanians should double the amount of coffee they drink in the next five years to help domestic growers, a senior official said on Monday.

Read the full TheCitizen article, Drink more coffee: official. Posted 12/16/09.

I sure don’t need anyone to tell me to drink more coffee! I could go have a cup now, but I don’t think it would help Tanzania any. That and the fact that it’s 11:50 PM.

Drink Coffee and Win a Nobel Prize

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Today’s Nobel Prize winners in economics, chemistry, and physics claimed coffee to play a positive role in their successes, along with intellectual freedom and independent research. Drinking coffee stimulates the nervous system and allows for an alert, focused mind, something imaginative thinkers could not do without. Regardless, it was not the caffeine from the coffee that the Nobel Prize winners were praising, despite the extra hours of work a pot of coffee may have facilitated.

OK, it’s not quite as easy as drinking a cup of joe, but coffee has been mentioned by nobel prize winners as helping out to a certain extent. Even though it may have been through indirect methods, such as during coffee breaks, this led to a conducive environment for unique thinking.

More Bikini Shop Ruckus

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

BELLEVUE, Wash. — A bikini barista stand on the Eastside is vowing to keep serving despite protests from neighbors and action by the city.

Following a Bellevue City Council meeting about the stand, the City Attorney ordered the Knotty Bodies Espresso stand to close its drive-through window because it violates city code.

But the barista working Tuesday morning told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Dubois the owner’s attorney said the drive-through can remain open.

These bikini coffee shops/stands have been in the news quite a bit lately, and it seems they are becoming more common. I wonder if some may have started because they knew they could get quick, free publicity. On more than one occasion, I’ve read how some of these stands are basically a front for brothels. There are a lot of people saying these should be regulated as adult stores, limiting where they can open shop. Besides that, for me, I wouldn’t even want someone serving me coffee or pastries in what amounts to their underwear. Hooters is one thing, but bikinis? I’m perfectly content getting my coffee from a fully-clothed barista.
